Hello Hello

Some comics I have been working on in Kishka class.

It's a work in progres, but since the semester is over, No more progress will be made.

Last week for the semester

ינואר 25, 2007

That's it. The last week of the first semester. I bet most of you will burn their ass on the chair they are sitting on during this weekend, in-front of the computer or on the drawing table.

So to make a nice break from illustration, prints, or last minute photoshop editing, here are several links that are just fun or nice to pass the time with. Enjoy, and good luck.

-Holy Land Maps – as seen recently on Ynet. Amazing old maps in super high resolution, dating even before 1650.

-Old Radios – Another eye candy. A site dedicated to old radios, with photos, of course.

-National Photo Gallery – Israel own site of national photos. Abit clumsy in navigation, but with great potential.

-Farkash Gallery – A historian insight. A great collection of old posters, photos, all regarding Israel designed past.

-High Speed Videos – If you ever wondered how an egg breaks or a face looks when punched, in super slow motion. Hours of enjoyment.

Animation sites

-MuffinFilms – The funniest flash movies i know ( even funnier than Happy Tree Friends). All around muffins, of course.

-Bitey Castle – Short humorous Flash movies. thanks to Adi for the link.

To Pass the Time With

-Be Jackson Pollock – with the help of flash.

-Sex ID – in case you are having trouble classifying your gender.

Have a fruitful weekend,

Omer

How To Paint Line Art In Photoshop

ינואר 22, 2007

As i so many times promised, here is a full description of how to color line-art drawings in photoshop. I will use an illustration most of you know from Ora's course. I will also write this post in english, as most Photoshop terms are in english, not to mention that wordpress works much better with images that way

Instructions

1. Scan your image ( you will usually do it in 300 dpi resolution). it doesn't really matter what color mode. I recommend applying levels to make the lines cleaner and getting the paper white as much as possible

stage1.jpgstage2.jpg

2. Covert the image to RGB ( image->mode->RGB color).

3. Desaurate the image to create a black, white and greys by clicking CTRL+SHIFT+U ( or Image->Adjustments->Desaturate).

4. Enter the Channels Palette. While holding the CTRL button, left click on the Blue Channel thumbnail. This will create a selection. If you are working on a very faint image, like pencil drawing, don't be alarmed if the selection looks wierd or incomplete.

stage3.jpg

5. Inverse the selection by clicking CTRL+SHIFT+I ( or Select-> Inverse).

stage4.jpg

6. In the Layers Palette, create a new layer by clicking on the New Layer button at the bottom ( or Layer->New->Layer). Select the new layer you have just created.

stage5.jpg

7. Now we have a new layer and a selection. All we need to do is fill it. Hit the D button to make the foreground color black, and click ALT+BACKSPACE. There are alot of other ways to fill, but this is the shortest one by far.

stage6.jpg
Tada! you have the line art in a new layer, with all the transparencies preserved, creating a natural anti-aliasing with layers below it, while none of the quality is reduced. A good way to continue will be to create a flat white layer just below it, to see what you are working on.

stage7.jpg

What can i do now and why Omer claims this techniques so good?

2 reason. From now on, all the coloring you will do will be in the layers BELOW the line-art layer, so coloring can be very free without restrictions of Multiply modes.

Second, changing the line colors will become very easy:

1. create a new layer ABOVE the line-art layer. Select new layer.

2. Hit ALT+CTRL+G. The new layer will be "attache" in a fashion called Clipping Mask ( or Group in old Photshop versions). This method will ensure that the bottom layer ( in our case, the line-art layer), will perform as a MASK for the top layer. So now painting in the top layer will be visible only in the lines, the non-transparent part of the image (:finalstage.jpg

New Links for shabbat

ינואר 19, 2007

first things first:

I am oh-so-happy to announce that after our brief but aggresive resistence to the new orders landed upon us by the Art department regarding use and compensation for the Printing Studio, we are now able to use the studio freely and the fees paid by us will remain the same ( 200 shekels). So collactive congratulations for us all…

It has become a habit of mine, to post new links for the shabes. So here are some to pass the weekend:

-Orit Arif comics Blog – She got several work propositions based on this site. Who says Internet doesnt work.

-Alit Avni's Blog – Israeli illustrator, freehand classic style.

-Roger Olmos Site – The book Dan was so happy to show us all was drawn by this guy.

-Israel Illustrator Society – Were we will all meet in the end. At least the people who will stay in Israel.

-Or you can try to find your favourite teachers here.

-Mundo Illustration portal

Shabat Shalom and enjoy the last moments before the vacation,

Omer.
